RAF Yellow Safety Torch

RAF Yellow Safety Torch

The right-angled yellow safety torch is an RAF issue to pilots and ground crew for aircraft inspection and maintenance. It is a robust construction made of ABS moulded plastic, and the design incorporates two rubber seals, one for the battery compartment cap, and the other for the glass making it waterproof to IP67 specification.

It has a rubber seal around the glass edge to prevent water moisture entering, and more importantly to keep the hot filament bulb sealed away from hazardous gases. The plastic bezel screws off easily for the purposes of replacing the bulb, glass, or rubber seal, and the manufacturer still provides all the parts. The diameter of the glass is around 4 cm, through which light could pass. The total length of the torch is 19 cm.

It also has a locking switch, and another non-locking one for the flashlight function for sending flash messages in Morse code. Here is a photograph of my right-angled torch, which is extremely useful for tracing wires behind servers and computers in a data centre.
